Work and hobby at the same time
Mogens is the son of a farmer and now lives with his girlfriend, Dorthe, and children Ludvig and Gustav at Skødegaard near Bække. The family also includes the dog Zulu, a small black cocker spaniel, a lot of cats - and of course all the farm's chickens. For Mogens, raising chickens is both a job and a hobby, and he enjoys going out into the barn to check on them several times a day. He loves everyday life with all his chickens. But there's a lot to do - so he doesn't have much of a vacation. "I've just had half a day's vacation and I'm thinking of taking another half day soon, so I can visit the family when they're away on holiday."
From temp to farm owner
Mogens started out as a cattle farmer like his father. And it was a bit of a coincidence that he later got involved in chicken production. When he finished agricultural school, he joined a temp agency. Through this he became acquainted with chicken farming and he was hooked. That was 15 years ago, and chicken farming suits him well. "There's a good rhythm and a lot of job satisfaction working with chickens."
A good trade-off
Mogens bought Skødegaard five years ago. It's a beautiful and well-kept royal farm that was built more than 150 years ago. Today, most of the land has been sold off. However, he has about 15 hectares of forest and five hectares of fields. The fields are helped by neighboring farmers. They get all his fertilizer for their fields, and in return Mogens gets a lot of straw. And his chickens are very happy about that.
